How Do You Get Out Of A Funk?

Hey, everybody! Just thought I’d pop in really quick with a couple of tips on what to do when you’re in a funk. Because I think this time of year, a lot of people start to get into one. Sometimes it’s just because you’ve been working hard, or it’s summertime and you’re not able to do the things you want to do etc. Depression is not just in the winter time. Sometimes, it’s actually worse in the summer. So there are lots of different reasons for people being in a funk.

So what do you do if and when you get into a funk?

  • You need to acknowledge it: You need to be willing to be open and honest enough with yourself to be able to say “I am in a funk” because it makes a HUGE difference! Just trying to power through things or fight through the day or fight through your workout and good nutrition when you’re just in that place when it’s not going the way you want it to is never fun. But before we can get out of that place, we have to admit that we are there 😉

  • Try to figure out WHY you are in the funk: We all get into a funk for different reasons. And I can’t answer that for you necessarily but you CAN. So it means, again, being open and honest enough with yourself to say “Hey, I’m in a funk” and then taking the time to figure out why. You know, maybe it’s the end of the school year, kids are graduating, life is changing, maybe you’re bored with your workout. So the process is to first, acknowledge that you are in a funk and then identify why you are in that place.

  • Give yourself the permission to be there: Don’t beat yourself up over it! Just don’t. It’s like one bad meal isn’t going to make a person fat. Just like one good meal isn’t going to make you skinny. Or the same goes with working out—one bad workout isn’t going to get you to lose everything you’ve worked for. And one good workout isn’t going to get you in the best shape of your life. So give yourself permission to be in that funk.

  • Make a plan to get out of it: Read something inspirational. You know, everyone is different. I am a big reader of inspiration so for me, to find an inspiration book or saying makes all the difference. And sometimes it’s about finding a story about a person who is much worse off than me and saying to myself, “If they can do it, why can’t I?” So whatever is going to inspire you, go for it. It’s going to help you build the desire to WANT to get out of the funk.

And then lastly, reach out to someone. Anyone. And acknowledge that you are in that funk and ask for help to get out of it. Because here’s the thing gang, most times we can’t get out of the funk on our own. We need someone to help pull us out of it. So acknowledge it, that’s the key. Try to figure out why you’re there because until you do that, you’ll never get out of it. Give yourself permission to be there. Find something inspirational that is going to motivate you enough to want to get out. And then again, reach out to a friend, someone that you trust and ask for help to be pulled out of it.

Hope this helps and know that you are loved and supported. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it ❤
